Aroma
Oak · ●●○○Caramel · ●○○○Agave · ●○○○Smoky · ●○○○

The aroma is fairly restrained. Oak is the strongest note at around a 2, supported by mild caramel, smoke, and agave. None of those secondary notes pushes very hard, so the nose feels balanced but somewhat muted. There is a faint suggestion of sweetness, but it never fully develops into a clearly sweet aroma.

Taste
Oak · ●●○○Smoky · ●○○○Agave · ●○○○

Oak remains the dominant flavor, again landing around a moderate 2. Mild smoke and agave sit underneath it. That makes sense given the barrel treatment, which moves the tequila through multiple American oak stages, including toasted and charred wood. You can taste that influence, but not in an especially bold way. There is also a recurring hint that some sweetness wants to emerge, but it never quite gets there. The result is more dry and woody than rich or dessert-like.

Finish
Oak · ●○○○Agave · ●○○○Spicy / Pepper · ●○○○

The finish brings mild spice, along with lingering agave and oak. The spice stays relatively soft, but it hangs around longer than its intensity would suggest. Oak remains part of the finish as well, keeping the barrel character consistent from aroma through the final sip. Nothing becomes harsh, but nothing really takes off either.

Verdict

Hornitos Añejo Reserve has a lighter, somewhat thinner appearance than I would expect from an añejo, and that visual impression carries into the tasting experience. It is a straightforward, oak-driven añejo with mild smoke, agave, caramel, and spice. The barrel influence is easy to recognize, but the flavors remain fairly restrained throughout. There is a recurring suggestion of sweetness, yet it never fully develops, leaving the tequila a little less rich and expressive than I would expect from the category. At its price point, that is probably the right way to view it: affordable, drinkable, and perfectly acceptable—but unlikely to wow you.
